Kaiju Noir - Update 16-07-2021 - In the blink of an eye


Hai folks, Kaiju here,

It's been a little while since we last caught up. I recently got a new full-time job and that's taken a lot out of me, as well as shaking up my routine. Which can be hard when you're working with folks all over the world.

We're only a couple of months out from testing so I wanted to let you know where we're at. Going to be doing my best to get this game out on time, but there will be no crunching so if there's a bit of delay it's because I want folks to be safe & happy.

We do have some big news though, all our base character art is done! I sat down with our artist over the last couple of weeks and we nailed out the last couple of designs that have been little more than concepts until now, and HECK, I am damn impressed. I cannot wait for y'all to see them.

Kaiju Noir has nine unique kaiju designs, along with a couple of cameo appearances from the team's personal characters, and I've fallen in love with each one of them over the last year or so. We've even gone the extra step so now all the characters are animated throughout the game. This might not seem like much but it's a not-often utilised trick in the game engine, and I think it gives the characters a lot more personality.



This does mean that I've upped the complexity level of this game's code by quite a bit. Mostly in making sure everything sits right & doesn't break, so I'll be working pretty hard for a while making sure everything is in place. Totally worth it.

So what's left? 

We've a few frames of character animation left to draw up, but minor compared to the task of creating unique monsters, plus some action shots to organise. From there it's just housekeeping until September when Kaiju Noir goes into testing phase where the testers will pick up all my spelling mistakes. Haha

Hang in there. I know I probably don't have to tell you this, but it's common to be overwhelmed when coming to a new job. Try to be kind to yourself and work to find balance in your life. Eventually your bandwidth for side-projects should open up once you get settled in. At least, that's how it worked for me when I got my job earlier this year, after being unemployed for most of least year.

Thanks, I appreciate it, and I've been through all this before. Too many times probably (damn capitalism), so I get the struggle.
If we weren't constantly going back & forth into lockdown where I live I don't think I'd be taking it so hard, but it's hard to keep a routine going without leadership or when you're having to switch up being in the office or stuck inside your house & can't get a pattern going

I'll be good though, things could be worse. Just looking forward to getting this game done already for y'all :)
